A Hard Rain At WSU
G.L.O.R.Y. Girl fan Ed Darcey checks in today with more pictures and results from Saturday's WSU 3rd Anniversary Show in Union City, New Jersey. This time it's G.L.O.R.Y. Girl Rain and Mercedes Martinez tearing up the ACE Arena...
As we saw yesterday, Amber O'Neal is now the #1 contender for the WSU World Women's Championship. But the question remained: who would she face in April at the NWS Women's J-Cup for the title? That was to be determined in the match immediately following Jazz/Amber. Dawn Marie, again exercising her power as Commissioner, had appointed a special referee for the showdown between Mercedes and Rain...and she was newly enshrined WSU Hall of Famer Molly Holly! (Evidently a wise move as two referees had been dazed in the previous match.)
The bad blood between the champ and the former TNA Knockout was evident from the outset as Rain, before Mercedes entered the ring, grabbed the title belt and hit Martinez right in the face with it. The next 25 minutes or so saw both combatants spend more time in the stands and around the ring than in it. A table made an appearance, though neither women was able make that object the agent of the coup de grace (though Mercedes was thrown against the table hard enough to break it).
In the end, as has been her M.O. in WSU, Rain grabbed a chair, DDT'd Mercedes onto it and went for the pin! WHOA!!! Martinez kicked out, fired back and Fisherman Bustered Rain onto the chair...knocking her senseless and getting the three-count to retain the title. One wonders after battling so hard and so long to hold onto the title, is time now on the side of the challenger, Amber O'Neal? Or is Mercedes' resolve, determination and grit too much for anyone on the WSU roster. We'll see in April!
